The word UPANAYAN means 'taking near' or 'leading to' or 'initiating'. It means to take or lead the child to a Guru. In the ancient days when the scripturally ordained modes of conduct were strictly followed, a father performed this ritual (upanayana) initiating his young child in the chanting of the Gayatri Mantra. This process is called as brahmopadesham.
The tenses in the Gayatri mantra indicate that we should meditate on the glory of the supreme Lord who is the embodiment of knowledge and light, who is the Remover of Ignorance. It is the mother of all the mantras, and when chanted with devotion and single-minded concentration and purity, takes the chanter to the ultimate bliss of the knowledge of the Supreme Truth.
Upanayana is also called the 'sacred thread ceremony'. It isperformed to mark the point at which children began their formal education in the Vedic tradition. Upanayana is traditionally seen as getting a new birth in the spiritual world towards the higher knowledge of the Self. It is an initiation process to learning the sacred chants and mantras according to the Vedic tradition. Upanayanam ceremony is complete with the wearing of the Yajnopavitam (Sacred Thread) on the body.
